"Chuck" producer developing sci-fi Western series
By Nellie Andreeva

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Fox has roped in a Western drama from "Chuck" executive producer Scott Rosenbaum.

The untitled project, from Warner Bros. TV and McG's studio-based Wonderland Sound and Vision, has landed a script commitment. Described as an epic Western with a sci-fi twist, the show will revolve around "a gunslinger caught between worlds" and will feature a nod to "Planet of the Apes," said Rosenbaum, who is executive producing with Wonderland's McG and Peter Johnson, who also is an executive producer on "Chuck."

"What I'm really interested in is the revamping of the Western genre where you still have all of the iconic Western themes and iconic Western tropes, but the idea is that it will feel incredibly contemporary and will introduce the Western to a whole new generation," Rosenbaum said.

Wonderland has strong ties with Fox, where the company landed its first series, "Fastlane" and "The O.C."

Wonderland is behind the network's new drama "Human Target," which joins the company's returning series "Chuck" and "Supernatural."

F*X already HAD a sci-fi Western series. It was called "Firefly," and they canceled it. =-[.]-=

Fox is developing a Firefly-ish Sci-Fi Western

Chuck producer penning series about gunslingers with a science-fiction twist.
Let's call him Ralcolm Meynolds!

Browncoats, ready your arms. Fox is giving the old Western-with-science-fiction-elements genre another go, ordering a script from Chuck executive producer Scott Rosenbaum, says The Hollywood Reporter. Now, this wouldn't normally be all that newsworthy, but we're guessing all you passionate Firefly fans might have something to say about it.

Off the top of our heads, we can think of three science-fiction westerns -- Wild Wild West, The Adventures of Brisco County Jr., and the most popular of of the group, Firefly. Given the limited amount of similar fare and the cult popularity of Firefly, there are bound to be comparisons -- though they may be unfair -- between Firefly and the new show. Plus, since it was Fox that cut Firefly's cord, fans of Joss Whedon's show are likely to feel even more burned over the abrupt cancellation.

So what's this new cowboys and aliens show all about? Well, we don't really know yet. Here's how The Hollywood Reporter put it: "Described as an epic Western with a sci-fi twist, the show will revolve around 'a gunslinger caught between worlds' and will feature a nod to Planet of the Apes."

One other clue as to how it may turn out: It's being produced by McG's Wonderland, which is responsible for shows like Chuck and Supernatural, but also for a ton of garbage.

Firefly fans -- let's hear it!

Oh, yeah... Have an opinion, alright. F*X s*X. Of course, this will go down the toilet within a month or two, if it even sees broadcast. But F*X has some big brass ones to pull this, and is clearly not blessed with an overabundance of brains, given the ready-made fanbase for a certain other show they could as easily put back on the air. =>[.]<=

Ok... I'm angry, and I'm armed.

I'm so angry... what I want to say is unpublishable.
Utterly.

Uh, Wolfe... How many sexy regular female cast members did BC, Jr. have? Or do you just have a thing for Bruce Campbell? =0[.]o=

I could go with this. CHUCK is pure genious, and this show might take off as well- at least more than half a season on FOX!

I fear you are operating under a delusion that the show on F*X would have a chance. If it is good, they will cancel it, if it is dreck that appeals to the masses... and you will need a drinking game to watch it... they'll keep it on cause the advertisers will love it...

So how do you explain FRINGE? It is far superior to what X-FILES became over time, and certainly is not dreck!
I would reserve that designation for THE VAMPIRE DIARIES....uugh!

I never have been able to parse the mind of FOX...
So, I cannot explain why Fringe... and not one of the previous well constructed possibilities... There have been at least two alien invasion pieces recently... one that the alien took over the body in water/ or replaced the human... very nicely done, excellent casting...
another in which the alien dna was replacing human... and worked around sound-

lovely premises... all plausible, well written, etc.

One was FOX while one was not-
Great strong female roles, neither made it.

One could speculate the whole 9/11 thing had political implications no politician wanted to see mirrored on TV, but I don't think that is really it. Course, I've been wrong before.

I do know that some very fine TV has gotten the boot. While "reality" may be cheap to produce, and you definitely draw an audience, it breaks my heart to see us toss drama and comedy aside for voyeurism.

I adore Fringe!!
I keep praying it will get the chance to play out. I love its complexity, the tension between characters' needs, the stated goal, and the secret agendas... I think it will make some great TV long term!

Do I trust FOX to keep it on the air long enough for me to find out what happens and why?

Ummmm, no.

If they do go with the 'space western' after Firefly, and it is NOT FIREFLY I think there will be a large contingent of Browncoats that lose their minds.
I'm liable to be one of 'em. I discovered it late... and I'm both a Joss fan... and a Sci Fi buff- so, the concept of the two together intrigues me... that I never got wind of it till it was well over, given my propensity to gravitate toward Sci Fi, and to be interested in material Joss would do-- that suggests more could have been done to promote the show and MAKE it successful.

That is what Idon't trust about FOX.

Now, here's another question... Chuck was supposed to be coming back for a second season... and I'm not seein' it anywhere???
Anybody else know somethin' I don't??

Chuck is coming back in March as a midseason (or late season) replacement. It will only have 13 episodes but will have Brandon Routh (Superman Resturns) and Smallville's Kruek (Lana Lang) in arcs.

I finally caught an episode of VD... HA!
And you are correct... BLEH!
However... just read the books... and son of a gun... not quite as witty as Buffy- and no knowledge- packed librarian hiding in the stacks... but evil fightin' goin on... and death/ but able to communicate...
and not a bad little story.

Butchered for the screaming teens...
Not that it didn't have some screamin...
But there was plot, and character development, and twists, and everything a good story should have.
So- there is simply no acountin for taste.
