Just a place to rant and rave about our favorite and least favorite WW2 films.

To get started, some favs:
Saving Private Ryan
Grave of the Fireflies
Valkyrie (not really a fave, but thoroughly underrated)
Letters from Iwo Jima
A Bridge Too Far (not the greatest film, but I have a personal bias regarding the subject matter)
Battle of Britain (Michael Caine just gives legitimacy to everything)

Some least favs:
Windtalkers (absolute garbage)
Pearl Harbor (an almost-decent movie pushed aside by a crap Danielle Steele homage)

Donald Sutherland was the shit, wasn't he?

Something like "Can't you for once say something righteous and positive?" comes to mind.

Great comedy piece.

While I'm a fan of almost everything HCJr has ever done smile.gif It's understandable if you were absent in any way in 2001 smile.gif

Was definitely absent. I still don't think I'm caught up on all the movies I want to see from that year, to be honest.

I'm tired of both of them, actually. But, yeah... if I had to choose, I'd choose Jack.

He's really a good actor, and a better musician. Sometimes I wish he'd give up the schtick and be serious for a while. But, then again, he wouldn't be Jack Black.

I remember seeing my friend's name in the credits of that horrible Tenacious D movie. I called him up and was like, "I can't believe you agreed to do that."

Nope. Every movie with the Hollywood Canteen in it is a big hokie, fake fest of a propaganda movie. Even if the Hollywood Canteen was started and run with good intentions.

SPR is totally overrated after the first half hour, but we've had this talk before. wink.gif

It's been years, but I remember being bored to tears by BoB.

LfIJ is frakking fantastic. It might be CE's best movie.

And I have to admit, I have a serious soft spot for The Longest Day.

Best war movie, maybe. Not best CE movie. Unforgiven's hard to beat, for one.

Unforgiven got bumped to two with LfIJ, but it's so close, it's hardly worth fighting over.

A good film set in WW2 is Ice Cold In Alex

Another good film is The Cruel Sea

WHAT???

It's true. Westerns aren't a genre I've watched a lot. I've got nothing against them, and I've liked a few, but I've just never watched many, including several big ones that I know are serious holes in my movie knowledge.

I hereby formally protest In Which We Serve, in that it deliberately, outrageously and maliciously ignores and belittles the role the USN played in the Battle of the Atlantic. Why, according to that propagandistic piece of historical revisionism, the British won that campaign all by themselves, when we all know they would have come to ruin were it not for the brave sacrifices of the Italian Resistance.
