I'm a huge comics fan (or nerd, depending on your preference), but I much prefer the DC mythos to the Marvel one.

So there.
DarthMarley
The post-Crisis (COIE) revival was great for DC, but later years, as they undid that event strayed from what I liked about what they got right in the mid-80s.

I too prefer DC to Marvel, but I find many gems in the indie scene, or even in the defunct publisher's back catalogues.

Rex Mundi was a favorite of mine, but I have cooled towards it a bit lately.

Yeah... DC after 2000 has been a horrible mess. But Ron Marz' run on Green Lantern and James Robinson's Starman will forever remain favorites of mine. Oh, and Grant Morrison's first dozen or so issues of JLA (the new Justice League of America is garbage).

I read a lot of indies, as well... some Dark Horse... I was big into Top Cow when Michael Turner was still alive.
WolfeFPS
Some of my favorite minis:

V for Vendetta and The Watchmen (nod to Alan Moore).

Kingdom Come. Love Alex Ross, but his attitude sucks.

Justice (enter Alex Ross' attitude).

Also love Planetary... favorite maxi of all time. Yeah, it's Wildstorm, but whatever.

And all the Sin City yarns. Love 'em. Can't wait for more. (okay, okay... those are Dark Horse, but I don't care).
DarthMarley
I thought Turner's last work was with Aspen on his Fathom line.

It was, but Fathom started out at Top Cow. I have most of the early issues... loved 'em. They got a bit disjointed after he got sick, but one can't blame him for that.

What I liked about Marvel was the fact that they used real cities instead of made up places like DC did eg, Metropolis, Gotham and Coast City.

Apart from that I prefered DC vertigo mainly for Hellblazer, Sandman etc.
RaiderDave2112
Has anyone here read any 2000ad, or any of the collected stories?

DC's definitely the bigger culprit as far as US cities go, but Marvel's got a few... and both make up foreign countries like they're going out of style.

Hellblazer's a good one... never got much into Sandman.

No, British comics suck.

I actually haven't read any of McDuffie's issues, but I'm a fan of JLU, and he was a big part of that.

But Brad Meltzer, who sucks (in my opinion), was responsible for the relaunch. It was GARBAGE.

Do you happen to know who's taking over?
WolfeFPS
Oh, and Dan Didio needs to go. He's the reason DC sucks so much lately.
DarthMarley
No clue about who takes it over. Nothing on the feeds about it has caught my attention.

DiDio needed to be fired long ago.

Yeah, really... I mean, anybody who thought 52 was a good idea should be forced to read that shit every day for the rest of their lives as punishment.

Best Green Lantern?

Alan Scott
Hal Jordan
John Stewart
Guy Gardner
Kyle Rayner

I'll have to write in G'nort Esplanade G'neesmacher.

Heh... G'nort. Forgot all about him.

I'm going with Rayner, though. He had the most potential, I think... until Didio fucked him, anyway. dry.gif

I miss Jeanette Kahn and Mike Carlin. sad.gif

I wasn't that much of a Green Lantern fan, in fact to be honest the only time I read anything with him in it was in the JLA comic. I started getting the JLA when they did the relanch with the White Martians where they pretended to be an alien race that made the JLA look bad and had a base in the Antartic, which was really a abandoned Martian city, I stopped collecting around the "Storm of Crows" storyline.

You're talking about Grant Morrison's relaunch of JLA. I read it from the White Martian storyline until "The Rock of Ages." 16 issues or so of sheer brilliance. And then it got really, really stupid.

But I still say the editors at DC should've just went ahead and allowed Zauriel to become the new Hawkman.

Thats it.

I was also a fan of Supergirl when they relaunched that title as well. It was around the same time as the JLA relaunch I believe

The "Supergirl is an angel" relaunch? I liked the art it that, but I hated the concept. Too chaotic... didn't make sense. Although, I liked how they reintroduced Comet, even if it was a little disturbing.

I collected that for the first 50 issues and it tendend to be very up and down.

Yeah, I agree. It was a valiant effort, trying to tie in all of the various incarnations of Supergirl into one character, but it fell short of that goal. Same thing happened with Hawkman, if you were ever into that character. That shit got nuts...

The only charaters from DC I really enjoyed enough to buy were Batman, Supergirl and various Vertigo Titles. I did buy a number of Superman graphic novels as I just didnt fancy buying 10 or so comics just to follow one story line, which is one of the main reasons I stopped collecting Batman and just started getting graphic novels.

When did you collect Batman? They stopped that crossover shit a loooooong time ago. Superman still does it, though, which I think is pretty ridiculous.

If you didn't read Batman and 'Tec, and the one shots, and the miniseries, and Robin and Nightwing (recent goners) then you missed something.

Oh, sure, but at least if you only bought one title, you didn't miss any of whatever story you were reading. I hated how Superman's set up... one book would have a good artist and a good writer, another book would have a crap artist and a good writer, and the other would have a good artist and a crap writer. That irritated me.

DC got so convoluted, anyway, I didn't really mind not getting "the whole picture." Shadow of the Bat was my favorite Batman title, but that was probably because of the pulp covers.

And, seriously, DC needs to stop that massive once-a-year crossover. I got tired of it after the one with Neron. DC One Million was okay, but only because it felt more like a JLA mini than an actual crossover.
DarthMarley
Okay, what about the Denny O'neil run of The Question?

I stopped just before the Contagion storyline then the No Man's Land as they ran through every comic and it was more than by wallet could bear.

Oh, I hear ya... I thought you meant the "perpetual crossover" like Superman does. I actually dropped all of my Batman titles right before "No Man's Land." The entire concept didn't interest me.
Shan Yu
i used to be into the comic scene... not so much anymore though... cut my teeth on DC titles such as supes and batman... On the DC side, there were two series that really were some of the best, The Legion of Super Heroes and The Teen Titans (way before the team was neutered by the cartoon)...

In particular, from the mid eighties --> Legion of Super Heroes: The Great Darkness Saga and Teen Titans:The Judas Contract and the Terror of Trigon (both butchered by the cartoon network)...

I'm actually reading No Man's land now.

Looks like just short of 90 issues.

Just 10 more years of Batman to read and I will be caught up!

Heh... I've got a ton of old 70s and 80s-era LSH books... back in the day when it was still apparently okay to call everyone "lad" and "lass." Never really got into TT, though I did pick it up for a bit when the Atom was the leader of the team... which sucked, oh by the way.

It's really sad that Paul Dini and Bruce Timm didn't get their LSH series that they wanted to do. That would've been awesome.

Heh... I feel ya. If I recall correctly, Greg Rucka and Devin Grayson were the lead writers on the NML setup, and they're a huge part of the reason I didn't bother with it.

Who wants to start a "Fire Dan DiDio" Internet petition?

I don't do petitions.

Whatever works.

I read his bio and prior to coming to DC as a VP of Marketing, the ass had no comic book experience whatsoever.

I guess that explains the plethora of dead characters coming back to life lately. Have you seen the zombie storyline they're doing now?

Ugh.

WolfeFPS
Hmm... in honor of the Harem thread, how about this question: Which 10 heroes would you put in the JLA?

Or do this... Pick, in order or precedence, 12 heroes you'd put in the JLA, plus 3 honorable mentions if you so desire.

Alrighty... me first, I guess.

1. Martian Manhunter
2-4. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman
5. Aquaman
6-7. Flash, Green Lantern (Hal or Kyle)
8-10. Atom, Green Arrow, Hawkman
11. Black Canary
12. Starman (Jack Knight).

Honorable mentions: Elongated Man (fuck Plastic Man), Red Tornado, Zatanna

Yeah, it's a bit traditionalist, and there are others I like seeing in the JLA, but if I had to choose, those are who I'd go with.

I had the Graphic Novels of No Man's Land, but ran out of shelf space to keep them, something weird though, the 2nd hand bookshop guy that I sold them to, still has them! and it was 4 years ago that I sold them to him.

I guess I've just gone on... but WTF?????????????

Does this mean imagination is dead? The best new artists can do to attract the old audience is to resurrect old, dead characters? Sad, very sad... sadder still. The artists with nothing new, and the folks that will buy into the line... I'd buy a "parallel universe" better than this concept. Really.
