Good idea or bad idea? The Sci Fi Channel is relaunching itself on air and online on July 7 with a new name: Syfy.

Here's what the channel says in a release: "By changing the name to Syfy, which remains phonetically identical, the new brand broadens perceptions and embraces a wider and more diverse range of imagination-based entertainment including fantasy, paranormal, reality, mystery, action and adventure, as well as science fiction. It also positions the brand for future growth by creating an ownable trademark that can travel easily with consumers across new media and non-linear digital platforms, new international channels and extend into new business ventures."

I would hazard a guess after the first year as SyFy, they change their programming altogether... good bye skiffy, it was nice knowing you...

Skiffy will always be Skiffy, to me... For what little that's worth.

Is it dropping the 'wrestling'... or finding a way to make the wrestlemania science fiction?

Corporate Marketing Translation - The science fiction name is what was driving our poor ratings. We will change the name, and everything will be better. We've done it in such a sly way that science fiction fans will not even notice or get offended that we consider them a millstone around our neck, and that's why we are doing this. Goodbye nerds, hello adolescents!!!
buffyverseforever
As long as I get plenty of genre programming,I don't care what they call themselves...
I do wish that all the people who run little cable networks would get over the belief that they should be getting the big ratings that even the networks can't get any more. Nobody is ever going to get giant ratigs again and the sooner everybody accepts it it, the better....

Best wishes,

Scott

Sort of like how Pluto will always be a planet right?

That they apparently bought the name from the owner of SyFyPortal.com is problematic.

Hinman has been a colorful personality in fandom, and I generally don't have issues with him.

But he has been an ass and was noted for his gratuitous lawsuit threats.

I am sure many think the same of me, and the problem is similar to what would accrue if I were notable awarded a consulting fee to tell them how to program.
Those aligned against me would have a negative reaction.

Um, Pluto is Mickey's dog, man!

They actually bought the name from Hinman?
Weird. I'm not a Hinman fan-the fact that he seems compelled to intepret everything in the most negative way possible bugs me-but,even if I were,I'd be a lttle amazed that NBC has even heard of him....

Best wishes,

Well if they are going to name the channel after the shows they screen, how come they haven't changed the name to SHIT?

25 Other Names The Sci Fi Channel Could Rebrand With
By Graeme McMillan, 7:00 AM on Wed Mar 18 2009, 24,642 views

It's been two days, and I still can't get my head around SciFi Channel being renamed "SyFy" (I mean, it's the same name! Just spelled stupidly!). Then I considered other alternatives.

I'll admit; I'm not really convinced exactly how misspelling "sci fi" is supposed to actually count as a name change for the network, never mind reach beyond the channel's current demographic to their prized aim of more female viewers. But just in case "SyFy" doesn't stick for whatever reason, we came up with 25 other suggestions that are... well, just as bad, really.

1. The Sci-Fi, But That's Not A Bad Thing Channel
2. The We Don't Have Cooties Channel
3. Being A Broadcast Network That Specializes In Pictorial Representations Of A Technical and Supernatural Nature
4. Sci-Fi Except For All That Wrestling Channel
5. Networkico Fantastico
6. Definitely Not Sci-Fi, No Way, Channel
7. Sci-Fi, What's That Channel
8. All Grace Park All The Time Channel
9. The Stargate Channel That Also Shows Star Trek Sometimes, But Never An Episode That You Want To Watch
10. The Why Isn't Battlestar Galactica On Anymore Channel
11. Hi-Fi Sci-Fi
12. Sci-Fi Schmi-Fi
13. Psy-Fy
14. Saturday Night Fish-Fi
15. Zzzzzzzzzy-Phy
16. Semper Fi
17. Si-Fi
15. Simon-Fi
16. Simon & Simon
17. The Rockford Files
18. Android's Dungeon TV
19. We're Worried That You're Still In Your Mom's Basement Because That's Not Really The Demographic We're Looking For Channel
20. Would It Kill You To Wear A Button-Down Shirt Once In Awhile Channel
21. The Look, Just Fuck Off Geeks, We Don't Want Your Kind Round Here Network
22. The Ladies, It's Okay, Don't Let The Robots Scare You Off Channel
23. Well, At Least We Didn't Call It SyFy
24. The Mansquito And Proud Of It Channel
25. Joss Whedon's Natural Home If He'd Only Realize It

Feel free to add your own in the comments. Just remember to claim your fee if it ends up being used.

Not sure I agree with #25, but still amusing!

He is now hanging out in the Skiffy General forum making sure to remind everyone that SyFy was his creation. Because you know, making up a silly 4 letter word is totes important. rolleyes.gif

Apparently, he is enraged that this SciFi wire interview failed to mention he created the name. He compared the journalism of this interview to third world dictators. wink.gif

Hey, at least he didn't use Hitler.
buffyverseforever
Would that I was surprised by that...
Anyway, the name is unimportant IMHO. What matters is what's on the network. Sci Fi does a lot of good things (BSG, Eureka, the Stargates, Sanctuary, airing Dr. Who and Sarah Jane and other stuff that I've forgotten) and a lot of bad things (ECW,their reality shows, most of their Saturday movies and other stuff that I've forgotten). I'm for anything that will lead to more good things airing on the network-I don't see a name change affecting that one way or the other....

Best wishes,

Scott

That would be the name of their broadcast lineup: The SyFyList.

Which is why Skiffy has now become Siffy to me. But I like SyFyList better. How about Siffylist? Easier to type.
