How good of a job did they do with the Sonic Screwdriver? I'm thinking of getting one.

Oh, and I also have the USB hub. However, my two owners -- er, my two neighbors' cats -- are definitely Whovians as they have not yet reacted badly to the pressing of the button.

Because it's full of typos, that's why. :D wink.gif No, I had the name before that. Also, before the yogurt. IF the Doctor said your names that many times, you'd fall over squeeing, right?

To address this in reverse order if I may...

Buy a Mac. You can always *also* run Windows on it if you need to.

The voices are from AT&T's Text-to-Speech Research Labs. Here's the generator page, from which you can also find out all kinds of interesting details and info on it.

EDIT: For what it's worth, when writing with a foreign accent, you need to take into account the relevant word choice and other usage patterns relevant to the region it represents. Otherwise, all you've got is, say, a British accented voice speaking American English, or vica versa.

EDIT #2: Speaking of Mac OS X, two things come to mind. 1.) Speech has been possible on the Mac since it's introduction in 1984. 2.) Have you heard the "Alex" voice in Mac OS X 10.5? It's actually garnered some critical praise.

ILU. Will now spam friends with French-in-French messages. I mean. In order?

I wish I had money. I'd so have a Mac.

Yeah, I know. (Vice versa.)

Wow. (Its.) And more Wow. Alex is only just slightly computery. *goes to see if Vista has more than MS Sam* NO! They got rid of him and now it's some Anna chick.

Yet another option, and one which while still somewhat restricted is not quite as restrictive as AT&T, is http://translation.paralink.com/

Here is an example. of the benefit of being both a language translation site as well as a text-to-speech site.

Have heard this one, but I've also heard it from such reputable sites as the Sun. Um. Yeah. It'd be neat, but I have to laugh at something that came up in discussion once: Patrick Stewart once mocked Lalla Ward for doing Scifi, when they worked together to do Shakespeare. Hahahh. (Fail.)
MikeTheC
It's funny, but I think Claudia Christian's two best bits of acting in the whole series are when she's gathered with others to sit shiva for her father on B5, and when she's recovered and talking to Dr. Franklin in Medlab after Jason's character sacrificed himself.

In both of these two instances, unlike in many other instances, the presentation of the material and delivery of lines seems so utterly natural and genuine it's almost as though there is no acting. I'd rate them as Claudia's finest moments.

Tennant to quit BBC hit Doctor Who

David Tennant has announced that he is vacating the Tardis and leaving
the BBC's Doctor Who series at the end of next year.

Tennant's decision brings to an end his popular four-year tenure as
the time lord.

The BBC confirmed that the actor will complete the filming of four
special episodes to be screened this year and in early 2010 as well as
2009's Christmas special.

Tennant, who is the tenth incarnation of the immortal time-traveller,
has starred in three series and three Christmas specials.

He has drawn praise for his reprisal of the role after Christopher
Eccleston left in 2005.

He said: "I've had the most brilliant, bewildering and life changing
time working on Doctor Who. I have loved every day of it.

"It would be very easy to cling on to the Tardis console forever and I
fear that if I don't take a deep breath and make the decision to move
on now, then I simply never will.

"This is all a long way off, of course. I'm not quitting, I'm back in
Cardiff in January to film four special episodes which will take
Doctor Who all the way through 2009.

He added: "I feel very privileged to have been part of this incredible
phenomenon, and whilst I'm looking forward to new challenges I know
I'll always be very proud to be the Tenth Doctor."

So, who's the next Time Lord gonna be?

=^[.]^=
MikeTheC
Hmm... yes, well...

*checks out all the usual sources*

It's something of a debate, with Robert Carlyle and David Morrissey being mentioned a bit, and really not very many others in any kind of serious way. Just as long as he's a strong person and British, it'll all be good.

"Time will tell," said the Seventh Doctor; "It always does."

I love Ten. He's like me, only, you know, alien and stuff. (And male.) Nine's just stabbing nostalgia moments, mostly. I have the same sorts of feelings about BF Audios' Five, and Eight. Four is mostly limited to sporadic DVD presence, and I've not seen much of anyone else, really, either.

Sadly, the BBC locks their content so it cannot be viewed outside of the UK.

That, however, is what BitTorrent is for. Well, that and surfthechannel.com wink.gif

Well, for me, I've generally gotten them *primarily* via BitTorrent. A few I had to get through LimeWire.

One of the advantages to BT, of course, is that with popularity comes ease of downloading. Anyhow...

Have I mentioned the webcomic The Ten Doctors? Unfortunately, it's having some server issues at the moment, but it's a great comic. I've got a backup of pages 90-131 on a dedicated photobucket account, but if you haven't read any of it at all, this isn't going to help you.

Anyway, the backup is here and I'll let you know when I've got it all up. If anyone's interested, I can update this thread when the comic comes up with a new page.

BTW, I'm up to Page 22. Will continue tomorrow sometime.

That's some awesome stuff!

Oh, hey, got a question for all of you folks...

Are any of you aware of any written or televised series which could be described as "like Dr. Who, but written for adults" ? I'm not asking if there are other time-travel stories and such out there (I'm quite well aware there are many others), but rather one which specifically meets my description above.

Thanks in advance!

And thanks again, Fizzix!

I dunno what you mean by the question, but I'm glad you like the story. XD

Reports that BBC drama supremo Julie Gardner - who has masterminded
the massive success of Doctor Who - is moving to the USA could mean
at least two of next year's specials are filmed there.

The Guardian says Gardner, the departing head of drama at BBC Wales
who oversees shows including Doctor Who and Merlin, is set to join
her current boss Jane Tranter in Los Angeles next year.

Tranter, the BBC Fiction controller, is moving to LA as executive
vice-president of programming and production for BBC Worldwide. The
Guardian says Gardner is lined up as Tranter's deputy or head of
production.

The newspaper says: "There has been speculation that at least two of
next year's four Doctor Who specials could be filmed in the US, with
Gardner going out to oversee them with a permanent move to LA soon
after."

Meanwhile, the trailer for the Christmas special, The Next Doctor,

Interesting to hear Dave say we'll see "another" Doctor in the Christmas Special. I wonder what that portends...

I sure hope we get to see Jenny, The Doctor's daughter, again. It would be nice to see them revisit that particular story arc, and perhaps make it a more significant one in realized terms instead of merely "implied" ones.

As the 45th anniversary of the start of Doctor Who approaches, the BBC has put online an archive collection of documents and images detailing the programme's genesis. It includes a 1962 report into whether the BBC should make a sci-fi drama, concept notes written in 1963 forming a summary of ideas for just such a programme, and background notes by C E Webber and Sydney Newman in which they outline the format for the new series that had been christened Dr. Who.

From IMDB.com:

Tennant Eyes Dr Who Musical
21 December 2008 11:53 PM, PST

Doctor Who
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0436992/
star David Tennant
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0855039/
is keen for the cult TV show to
be turned into a musical - because he loves "a song and a dance."

The Scottish actor is adamant the sci-fi programme would easily
translate to the stage, but would prefer to keep a musical version on TV
screens as it would be difficult to find the time for a long-running
live production.

He says, "Doctor Who
http://www.imdb. com/title/tt0436992/
: The Musical has been mentioned. I would be up for it. I love a song and a
dance. The thing about a musical is you have to commit for a year and a
half and it's eight times a week."

Tennant was recently forced to pull out of his run in a London
production of Shakespeare' s Hamlet due to a back injury.

Wonder what kind of singing voices Daleks, Sontarans, and Cybermen have?

New Doctor Who to be announced
David Tennant
Who will be next to take on the keys to the Tardis?

The name of the actor who will replace David Tennant in Doctor Who will be announced on Saturday.

Tennant said in October that he would stand down from the show after filming four special episodes in 2009.

His replacement - the eleventh Doctor of the TV series - will be revealed in a Doctor Who Confidential programme on BBC One at 1735 on 3 January.

The casting was confirmed over Christmas and filming for the 2010 series begins in the summer.

Tennant is due to begin shooting the first of his four specials this month, just weeks after surgery on his back.

David Tennant says he is envious of his replacement, whose 'life will change'

The last of these episodes is expected to run in early 2010.

'Nail-biting Christmas'

The casting decision has been a priority for the show's new creative team, led by executive producers Steven Moffat and Piers Wenger.

The BBC said that in Saturday's Doctor Who special "the actor playing the new Doctor will be giving his or her initial reaction" to becoming TV's most famous time traveller.

Wenger, head of drama at BBC Wales, said: "We believe the actor is going to bring something very special to the role and will make it absolutely their own.

THE 10 DOCTORS

5. Peter Davison

7. Sylvester McCoy
8. Paul McGann
9. Christopher Eccleston
10. David Tennant
11. ???
"I just can't wait to tell everyone who it is - it has been a nail-biting Christmas trying to keep this under wraps!"

Shortly after Tennant's announcement, bookmakers were tipping several well-known names as the next actor (or actress) to step into the Tardis.

Murphy's Law and Cold Feet star James Nesbitt emerged as one of the favourites, along with Paterson Joseph, John Simm and David Morrissey - who appeared in the 2008 Christmas special.

Paterson Joseph, who recently starred in Survivors and appeared in two Doctor Who episodes in 2005, has said "any actor would love the challenge" of playing the Time Lord.

Bookmakers made him an early favourite - offering odds of 3-1 on him becoming the first black Doctor.

Comedian Jennifer Saunders, former Doctor Who assistant Billie Piper and film star Catherine Zeta Jones have also been mentioned in connection with the role.

The show's outgoing executive producer Russell T Davies said last month: "Whoever becomes the Doctor has got to take on a whole life. It's not just becoming a part of a TV show."

HAVE YOUR SAY

It would be nice to see an older wiser Dr arrive on the scene. Less cheeky chap and more brilliant eccentric professor.

K., Bristol
Send us your comments

In October, when Tennant was asked who he thought should replace him, he joked: "Well, I've always been a big supporter of Wee Jimmy Krankie!"

Doctor Who began in 1963, and seven actors played the Doctor before the show was dropped in 1989.

After a TV movie in 1996 - starring Paul McGann - the TV series returned in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston in the lead role. Tennant took over the role the same year.
