John Scott Martin Remembered
January 13, 2009 by Michael Hickerson || Category: Human Interest

Actor John Scott Martin, who brought countless classic “Doctor Who” monsters to life, has passed away at the age of eighty-two according to Britian’s entertainment paper, “The Stage.”

Martin appeared as multiple monsters during the classic series’ original 26 year run, but is probably best known as one of the original Dalek operators. The actor enjoyed his run inside the metal monster so much that he told BBC News that he’d like the chance to play one again on the revived series.
Martin could also been seen occasionally as himself in “Doctor Who.” He appears as a miner who encounters a mysterious green slime in the opening moments of “The Green Death,” from Jon Pertwee’s era on the show. (”The Green Death” is available on DVD and can be purchased via iTunes). Martin appeared in 110 episodes of classic “Doctor Who.”

Martin also worked on stage in productions of “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Oliver!” and “The Streets of London.” He also appeared in the film productions of “Little Shop of Horrors,” Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” and “Monty Python’s The Life of Brian.”

“John lived in Great Maplestead, where he was church warden and school governor and, as he loved people, he enjoyed village life,” his daughter Catriona Martin wrote in his obituary. “As he bravely battled Parkinson’s disease, cared for by his devoted wife Margaret, he took great pleasure in following and supporting my acting career. He passed away peacefully, aged 82, on January 6. A perfect gentleman, warm, kind and funny, he will be missed by so many.”

His funeral will take place at 12 noon on Saturday, January 17 at St Giles Church, Great Maplestead, Nr Halstead, Essex.”

Here's a webcomic with WHOvian fandom overtones. Might wanna read the following subsequent strips in the series, too!

Doctor Who Finds Its Bionic Companion (Michelle Ryan)

By ALAN STANLEY BLAIR

Forget Catherine Zeta Jones, the BBC's signature time travelling
series has finally found its companion: former "Bionic Woman" star
Michelle Ryan.

At least that's what the latest reports are.

Starring alongside the youngest Doctor in the show's history, Ryan
will provide the human element to the series and serve as the entry
point for the "Doctor Who" audience. No official announcement has
come from the BBC, however the tabloid newspaper claims that
confirmation is imminent.

"Michelle's been in secret talks with BBC bosses," a source told the
Sunday Mirror. "They are likely to announce her as Doctor Who's new
assistant very soon. She is perfect for the role. She is good looking
and the right age to star alongside Matt. Everyone agrees they look
great together and reckon fans will think they're the perfect team,
too."

Although she has a handful of genre roles to her name (including
"Bionic Woman" and the new BBC family drama, "Merlin") is was the
soap series "EastEnders" that initially launched her career.

"The BBC launched Michelle's acting career as Zoe Slater in
'EastEnders' and she will be thrilled to be back with them in such a
legendary role," the source added. "It's an incredible opportunity
for her and even though she's had a lot of success already she is
still young and at the start of her career."

And speaking of companions...

Saw this yesterday. I was one of the few that actually liked her on Bionic Woman, so I'm looking forward to seeing her on Who. smile.gif

Five Years for Matt Smith?
February 11, 2009 • Posted By Chuck Foster

The media are reporting today that new Doctor Matt Smith has been signed up for three years, with an option for an additional two. The Sun announced that "NEW Doctor Who Matt Smith will get £1million to play the Time Lord for five years. The little-known actor, 26, has signed a £200,000-a-year deal with the BBC1 sci-fi hit. His contract ties him into the show for three years, with the option of two more after that." The ubiquitous insider said: "Bosses don't want Matt doing a David and leaving when things are going great."

Also reported by the Telegraph and Daily Mail.

They wanna make the most of this regeneration, I 'spose. =^[.]^=

I dunno. I'm certain that folks in the UK are quite used to asking that very same question about US shows. =^[.]^=
