Tron 2 (no, the subtitle isn't really "The Upgrade"... yet) is slated for release in 2010, a sequel to the 1982 Disney flick set in a sort of proto-cyberspace. According to one source,

"And it is confirmed: Jeff Bridges who played the role Kevin Flynn in the first original Tron movie will reprise his role (an older version of course). Indeed we have a glimpse of Jeff Bridges overlooking a digitized battlefield in this Tron 2 trailer."

The trailer is a bootleg, taken by cell-phone at Comic Con. Despite the quality issues, it is clear that this new film will represent 26 years of advances in both SFX and computer technology. No word, yet, on whether Bruce Boxleitner will reprise his role as the titular program/character Tron.

Heheh. This very question arose on another forum weeks ago when I first caught wind of this. I suspect they would have no problem digitally "youthening" Boxleitner, if the script called for it. Of course, there was an older program (played by barnard Hughes) in the original film. Mebbe Tron'll be long in tooth, until he receives a much-needed upgrade service pack, so he can put away some virus or other.

I also wonder if Disney will commission another Wendy Carlos soundtrack?

Honestly, they should just aim for a reboot like everyone else is doing. Then they could fix that crappy ending. laugh.gif

Interesting that Boxleitner wasn't the only eventual Babylon 5 cast member in Tron; Peter Jurasik (Londo Mollari) portrayed the ill-fated program Crom.

It's amazing how many people don't get that. I've even pointed it out to people, and they're all like "Oh, no, that's not Peter." And I'm all like "The hell it isn't. Look at the face, listen to the voice, and read the IMDB, baby..."

I remember a few years ago when I was hearing rumblings about a desire to do a Tron 2, and I always thought it would be interesting to see them maybe switch it so that Tron and Yori were somehow made to manifest in the real world, and they get to see what life is really like out here. There's a scene between Kevin Flynn, Tron and Yori (Tron's girlfriend) that represents a sort of hook into such a notion:

QUOTE(Tron The Movie)
FLYNN: Laura?
TRON: This is Flynn. The one who busted me out.
FLYNN: Laura?
YORI: Well, then I owe him some... thanks.
FLYNN: No, it's, uh, no big deal. I ought to know my way around the Light Cycle routine, I wrote the program for it.
TRON: You wrote the program?
FLYNN: It's time I level with you. I'm what you guys call a user.
YORI: You're a user?
FLYNN: I took a wrong turn somewhere.
TRON: If you are a user, then everything you've done has been according to a plan, right?
FLYNN: Heh... Ah, you wish. Well, you guys know what it's like. You just keep doing what it looks like you're supposed to be doing, no matter how crazy it seems.
TRON: That's the way it's for programs, yes.
FLYNN: I hate to disappoint you, pal, but most of the time that's the way it is for users, too.
TRON: Stranger and stranger.
FLYNN: So, nice looking ship you got here.

Here's some of Peter's dialog in the movie. If you're going to tease Peter, don't just do it with wallpaper, do it with style! :)

A little more news:

QUOTE
Daft Punk scores "Tron" soundtrack

By David J. Prince David J. Prince – 1 hr 2 mins ago

NEW YORK (Billboard) – Daft Punk, the French electronica duo known for their robot personas, will compose the score for "TR2N," Walt Disney Pictures' update of its 1982 science fiction classic "Tron."

The film, currently in production, is tentatively scheduled for a 2011 release.

The "TR2N" score marks Daft Punk's first foray into the studio since 2005's "Human After All." After an extended hiatus, the duo reemerged in 2007 for an extensive world tour, spawning the Grammy-wining live set "Alive 2007." The group's 2001 track "Harder Better Faster Stronger" was adapted by Kanye West for his single "Stronger," and the pair appeared at the 2008 Grammy Awards with the rapper.

The musicians, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, split their time between Paris and Los Angeles, where they have assembled a new recording studio for the TR2N project.

Daft Punk have worked in film before, most notably as directors of their feature "Electroma," although that film used none of the group's own music.

The original "Tron," which pioneered the use of computer graphics, was scored by Wendy Carlos, an electronic musician and composer whose "Switched on Bach" album was one of the first to highlight the Moog synthesizer as a musical instrument.

(Editing by Dean Goodman at Reuters)

Too bad. I was actually hoping Wendy Carlos was going to do the score again, this time.
