QUOTE From our interview with star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, it was also pretty clear that his character was having a really bad day. Coster-Waldau, who plays the captain of the starship, was in full makeup that made his entire body look like one solid bruise. Despite the mysteries, we learned a great deal about the crew of the Phaeton, who are primarily scientists. Six of the crew are married couples, including a gay couple. (And sharp-eyed fans may spot a few science and SF references in the character names.) -------------------- ![]() "Science is one cold hearted bitch with a 14 inch strap-on." |

I noticed a very short blurb on Skiffy that Virtuality may still get picked up this year, but if it is it will be re-done as a more conventional drama series. Fox is moving on two other pilots though.

Okay watch the clips, not impressed. I don't like real reality shows so why would I want to watch a fake one again? I don't feel like I connected with any of the characters or found them interesting or amusing, in fact they all seem pretty bland and generic to me.
Also the situation is ludicrous. No ship is going to be launched for deep space travel and then have the people on it decide whether to go back or not and then make that a reality show. Uh no. Sounds like it's the first such mission of it's kind so if they're on an important scientific mission and one that may be critical as the beginning made it sound, they don't have time for emo drama and voting and all that stupid crap. Sorry, I don't buy it. It's a shitty premise just trying to be cool and mix virtual reality with television reality and ooh throw a couple of gay people in and and Englishman. I think I shall have to be washing my hair also. And yes a Ship on a multi year trip will have a go-no go point a point of no return if that will make it more familiar to you. Corporate sponsorship and reality TV as funding sources of an endeavor of this type is probably the only way to get the financing, completed. -------------------- |

I wasn't paying complete attention to it as it was on in the background, but the whole if you are raped virutally, did you really get raped question was ridiculous from a story perspective. Does it matter? They are in space. There's no criminal court there. The psychological trauma is there or not (depending on how someone views the VR experience) while the body doesn't bear the scars. This is going to be true of EVERYTHING that happens in VR vs. real life. It's a plot device that is a non-issue. It's intellectual masturbation IMO and leads the story nowhere.
These are also the same issues for Caprica. VR vs. real life, what does it mean to exist as a person (cylon or VR)? As I said earlier in this thread, these are the same old issues he's rehashed over the 20 years of his career. Do something else, Ron. Let's see some imagination. -------------------- Honor is the gift you give yourself.

Remember the old FOX show VR5?
"VR5 is real." Hell, that was mid-90s television. This just didn't grab me. I didn't pay enough attention to it to be able to complain about it. I just didn't get sucked in to the fictional world that was presented, and on that level, it failed for me. It seemed more like "Unfinished Business" than "In the Pale Moonlight" which I preferred from MT/RDM. I look more forward to rewatching B5, Farscape, and The Prisoner than to giving this a thorough viewing. I see some positive reviews from some sf fans, and that is fair enough. This could have made it as a show, perhaps. -------------------- ![]() "Science is one cold hearted bitch with a 14 inch strap-on." |

Yeah, so I finally watched the premiere today...
Believe it or not, there were a few moments in it that I thought I was going to wind up liking it, but in typical fashion there were far too many flaws. Pity, too, because the two male leads are favorite actors of mine. It was tolerable until the aftermath of the rape scene... talk about a serious jump in logic. They tried to pack way too much into a story that needed far, far less. And it probably would've been a shitload better without the reality show subplot. I didn't mind the corporate sponsorship (even though I'm sick of "evil corporation" plots), but the reality thing was just another distraction from what could've been an intriguing show. Instead... a bunch of predictable blah from a blah script. Even with Peter Berg running things it just fell flat. And RDM seriously needs to learn the difference between homage and derivation. If Fox somehow decides to pick this up for a series, they're going to regret it. -------------------- I'd rather be a Commodore than the lower half of a Rear Admiral any day.
